But pass rates for those taking core subjects English and Maths down 7 per cent
Nine out of every 10 students who sat GCSE exams at Brookfield School this summer passed at least five subjects at grades A* to C - a five per cent improvement on last year’s results.
However the results were less rosy for those taking the core subjects of English and Maths – only six out of every 10 pupils taking these subjects achieved five passes at A* to C – and that was seven per cent down on last year’s figure.
The Brookfield figures buck the national trend which saw a fall in the proportion of GCSEs awarded an A*-C grade, for the first time since the exams were introduced 24 years ago. This year’s results show that nationally 69.4% of entries earned grades A*-C, compared with 69.8% last year.
In total 347 pupils at Brookfield in Sarisbury Green sat GCSEs this year with some of the best results coming in science and media. Pass rates above C grade included:
- Double Science – 90 per cent
- Triple Science – 99 per cent
- English – 71 per cent
- Maths – 72 per cent
- Drama – 80 per cent
- media – 90 per cent
- ICT – 90 per cent
- History – 83 per cent
- Art – 85 per cent
Head teacher Ria Allan said she was delighted at the increased number of students achieving five or more GCSEs.
“This is a fantastic achievement because, at Brookfield, we have continued to follow a traditional GCSE curriculum programme for almost all our students,” she said. “This improvement, therefore, reflects hard work and high levels of commitment.”
She said tougher government standards and expectations in core subjects such as Maths and English could be to blame for the dip in the figures for those subjects.
“It appears at this stage to be harder to achieve top grades in these subjects and we will be analysing our results in relation to the national picture which is likely to emerge over the next few days and weeks.
“I would like to congratulate all our students on their results and wish them well for the future.”
